This is the second time that the career guidance program has been organized by MARG Karaikal Port & MSSRF

MARG Karaikal Port Pvt. Ltd. in association with M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation today organised a Career Guidance Programme at Karaikal for the student community in the district. Mr. Anto Alphonse, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police, Karaikal graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and released the “Career Guidance Booklet”. The special guest for the programme Captain K.N. Ramesh, Chief Operating Officer, MARG Karaikal Port gave key note address. Others who addressed the inaugural session included Vetrivel Ramadhass, Asstt. Vice President, MARG Karaikal Port and Ms. Nancy J Anabel, Director, IEC, MSSRF, Chennai.

The fair attracted more than 350 students & commenced with the release of “Career Guidance Booklet” – an exhaustive compilation on career options. This booklet provides a detailed insight into various career streams that youngsters from Karaikal & Nagapattinam can pursue. The objective of this booklet is to guide and channelize the resources available with these youngsters in the most optimal manner in tune with their skill sets.

As part of MARG Karaikal Port’s CSR initiatives, this career guidance program has been designed to benefit the students and provide them with valuable and constructive information on higher education, degree and the diploma courses. Having seen the tremendous response to the first edition of the Career Guidance programme held in 2011, MARG Karaikal Port and M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation have once again joined hands to reach out to the student community of both Karaikal & Nagapattinam region.

Commenting on this initiative, Capt. Ramesh, Chief Operating Officer, MARG Karaikal Port said, “Our strategic collaboration with MSSRF has been continuing since 2011 and is aimed towards holistic development in this region. This collaboration has effectively complemented our community development initiatives being driven through our CSR brand ‘MARG Parivarthan’. Jointly with MSSRF, we have already reached out 20,000 farmers, fisher folk & women SHGs at Nagapattinam & Karaikal region through a unique technology enabled ‘Knowledge connectivity programme’. The project has since drawn attention for its innovative model and positive impact. This education initiative is part of a comprehensive CSR plan that we have for the region.”
This career guidance programme is unique as it has opened up a wide range of off-beat courses to the participants in the spheres of Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), Arts & Science, Polytechnic & Technical Education, Catering courses, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Coastal Aqua Culture, Agricultural courses, Veterinary and animal sciences, Engineering courses, Law education, Medicine etc.

Capt. Ramesh also added, “The career guidance programme is mainly aimed towards rural students who have limited opportunities for exposure to the spectrum of educational choices available. A lot of our bright students miss out on lucrative careers on account of this. I am happy that we have been able to contribute fruitfully to the student community in this region.”

The fair witnessed over 350 enthused students from Karaikal & Nagapattinam districts. Experts from diverse fields/ professions and premier educational institutes enlightened the students on various career options and opportunities. Kanagasekar, Head Master – Govt. High School, Kovilpathu, Karaikal.
The fair concluded with a question & answer session facilitated by S.Velvizhi, Principal Scientist – MSSRF.

Education is the most powerful tool for human empowerment. MSSRF, Nagapattinam centre has been actively engaged in this region promoting sustainable rural livelihoods through digital empowerment based on a pro-poor and pro-women orientation to technology choice and dissemination and human resource development. The development programmes are executed based on the specific needs of the geography and The Career Guidance Fair is just one of the regular annual events.

Karaikal Port handles containers and crude palm oil in February, 2013

Chennai, February 15, 2013: Karaikal Port enters ‘Box Club’ of TN ports, begins container handling. The inaugural call of the 1,900 TEUs container vessel M.V. Tiger Bridge was marked with the exchange of mementoes with Capt. Celerian Dennis, Captain of the vessel, and the operators with the port.

With the fete, Karaikal Port becomes the fourth port in the State to have facility for handling containerized cargo after Chennai, Tuticorin and Kattupalli ports.

Initially, the feeder vessel is expected to call the port every fortnight and later would become a weekly service as volumes stabilize. The inaugural call witnessed the export of 50 laden containers of CMA-CGM, the French container shipping giant which is one of the world’s largest container shipping lines.

According to port officials, this service, which offers connections throughout the world, is expected to be of immense value to the agro-industrial heartland of Central Tamil Nadu, Karaikal and Pondicherry, enabling business establishments in the hinterland to competitively access the world’s marketplace.

In addition to providing a competitive gateway for the exports and imports from this area, it will also help in reducing the carbon footprint of the industries by substantially reducing the distance through which the cargo has to be moved by road leading to benefits for the society of the entire region, the port officials added.

LIQUID CARGO

Continuing and strengthening its presence in handling liquid cargo, the newly constructed tankages in Karaikal Port, augmenting the total capacity of the port to 19,000 cbm, was commissioned on Feb. 8.

The commissioning of the new oil tankages was marked with the arrival of the first shipment of Crude Palmolein vide vessel M.T.MAPLE for M/s BUNGE. Also, Karaikal Port is regularly handling refined edible oil for M/s KTV Health Pvt. Ltd.

GRAINS EXPORT

This year also saw the commencement of wheat export from Karaikal Port. Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been exporting wheat through the port and till date, more than 1, 25, 000 MT of wheat has been exported. Another addition to the agro commodities, maize is getting ready for export. The commodity has already started to stockpile at the port’s warehouses and will be ready for loading onto the vessel shortly.

Handled 8.5 Lakh tonnes of cargo in March 2012, highest ever in a single month

Chennai, April 3, 2012: MARG Karaikal Port, a subsidiary of Chennai headquartered MARG Limited, one amongst India’s fastest growing infrastructure companies, posted impressive growth in the volume of cargo handled during FY2012, making the Port one of the fastest growing in the country. The total cargo handled at the Karaikal Port rose to6.01 million metric tonnes, notching up a sharp growth of over 26.5% more than the volume of 4.75 million metric tonnes handled during the previous financial year.

One of the major factors in the growth was the increased volume of clean cargo such as fertilizer whose volumes nearly doubled in comparison with the previous financial year. March 2012 was a record setting month with the Port handling around 850,000 tonnes of cargo, the highest ever in a single month. Also the Port has handled large scale exports of raw sugar for the first time during the year and the Port also saw an increase in the export of processed sugar to various overseas destinations.

The Port’s cargo handling capacity and capabilities increased significantly during the past 12 months as 2 new deep draft berths were commissioned, taking the total number of berths available at the Port to 5 at present. The Port has also deployed dedicated infrastructure to handle containers and liquid cargo and expanded the existing facilities catering to dry bulk cargo.

FY 2011-12 witnessed the launch of container handling services at Karaikal Port when a feeder service linking the Port with Colombo and other Indian ports was flagged off. The container services at the Port received a further boost in March 2012 with the start of weekly scheduled train services by CONCOR that link Karaikal Port with the CONCOR ICD at Tondiarpet, Chennai.

During the year, MARG Karaikal Port received its first liquid cargo vessel when the first tanker vessel carrying crude oil for Chennai Petroleum Corp. (CPCL) refinery at Nagapattinam called at the Port during the last quarter of the financial year. This also marked the beginning of long term arrangement between CPCL and Karaikal Port to handle crude oil imports for the former’s refinery on an exclusive basis.

In keeping with the Government of India’s vision of promoting the use of coastal shipping for movement of cargo within the country, MARG Karaikal Port supported the shipping of cargo such as cement, construction materials and containers between Karaikal and various domestic destinations.
